Stanley was part of the Union Army, and he traveled to several places around the United States such as Coatesville, Amo, Cartersburg, Clayton, Bellville, and Louisville, Kentucky. Mordecai Stanley was sending his letter to Elwood Stanley and his wife, Emma Mills Stanley. In the letter, Mordecai mentions how Emma Mills makes great molasses, and how he ate all the molasses that he previously had.

Military Career
Mordecai Stanley served in Company F of the 11 Indiana Calvary. He served as a private during the Civil War.
Life After the War
Mordecai C. Stanley was discharged before the war was over, and moved to Parke County. It was there, that he met his soon-to-be wife, Isabella Bayne. He died 12 years after the Civil War ended. Mordecai Stanley was buried in Bloomingdale Friends Cemetery.
